More Christmas

Got my box from Rock Auto as well this weekend.  I have not yet put in the plugs but this weekend was pretty busy.  However, I did manage to get a little tuning done with the throttle body.
Going off of what I've been reading at MyE28 regarding poor idling I did some TB adjustments.  I followed the quick steps on the forum and consulted the Bentley.  I pulled the TB out (disconnect the throttle cables, undo the intake boot and remove 4 nuts) to have better access.  First I adjusted the throttle plate so that there is a minuscule gap at the "closed" position.  I set that and went to work on the throttle position sensor, which has likely not worked as designed in a long time.  When closed the switch was not engaging at all, meaning the engine had no idea it was supposed to idle.  Took a while to get the screws loose to adjust it but I eventually did and set it to where the TPS was just barely engaged; you can hear it click on and off as the plate moves open and closed.  I reinstalled the TB, hooked the intake and cables back up and adjusted the set screws on the cables so that there is just a slight amount of slack.  Then I prayed to the car gods that it would still start and run.

I fired it up and, despite the still missing vacuum hose, it runs surprisingly smoothly.  In fact, since my dad bought it however long ago it has probably never run this well.  I took it for a spin around the block and it still lacks some power up until about 3krpm (probably the missing hose) but feels very good.  The oil change probably helped some.  I was probably the last to change it however many years ago.  Now it has some fresh Valvoline VR1 20w50 and a clean filter.  I'll probably do another in 1000 miles to get some of the junk out quick and refill with the same.  I'm also looking into a coolant flush and replacing the t-stat and water pump gasket.  I also need to see about what it takes to replace the timing belt on these.
