Looks like we might start seeing some consistently warmer weather now. Of course by warmer I don't necessarily mean warm. I would still consider 40s and 50s cold but at least I'd be able to work on the Beast.
Interesting story from the winter. Before it got cold I put on one of those battery disconnectors, the type where you loosen the knob and it physically cuts the circuit. Since the car wouldn't be getting much, if any, use in cold I figured it was the best way to keep the battery from draining off while sitting on the driveway. I popped the hood, made sure everything was off and tucked away, locked it, disconnected the battery and closed up the hood.
A few months later, after several feet of snow and some pretty heavy ice I decided to see if the ol' Beast would fire up or if it was out of commission. After scraping through that heavy ice I could not get the doors open. The locks looked like they were open but the doors were stuck. I decided to make sure, but oops! The central lock system from the trunk (how I am used to unlocking) needs battery power! No problem, I went over to the drivers door and used that. Wait, nothing is engaging here! Left, right, jiggle, jiggle...nothing. Well now I'm in trouble. I started thinking of all kinds of ways to get in: bust the window, coat hangers, can I unlatch the hood from underneath?
Then I walked over to the passenger side and saw the front door was a little bit open. This door needs to be slammed by Paul Bunyan to close properly so I wasn't much surprised. It had some play in it but still wouldn't unlock. For grins I tried the back door and viola! Door opens! I crawl up to the front to undo the hood and get the battery back connected again. The doors, however, still don't open even unlocked now because they are plain frozen shut. So I crawl back in and hope it starts; it does! I let it warm up for several minutes with the heat on max to get the ice melted. Ultimately I got the doors open and the rest of the car cleaned up and it even runs! Good day, if frustrating a bit.
But I suppose now I need to add the door locks to the list of things to fix!
